[IMCY ACTIVITY REPORT] Cookpad & IMCY Recipe Sharing Party Autumn 2015

We had the second Recipe Sharing Lunch Party at Cookpad kitchen in Ebisu on November 30th.

This time, the theme was: Autumn / Kids-friendly or Holidays.

Children were rather younger than last time, so mostly moms cooked the dishes, but the oldest helped us, too (which was really cute).

Some prepared desserts at home and brought them for the lunch:

Spiral cookies and a stollen (German/Alsacien Christmas bread)

And we cooked following dishes:

-Chickpea cocktail salad
-Potato Mochi (imo-mochi)
-Osechi dishes (Red and White Namasu, Datemaki, Kombu-maki, Sweet potato chakin, Kuri Kinton and Kamaboko)

Some participants haven't prepared Osechi (a boxed Japanese New Year meal) before and were excited to learn how to cook some of the typical dishes. They're not so difficult at all!

We prepared three flavors of imo-mochi (cheese, nori and purple potato-colored).

And we also tried the Kamaboko cutwork!

And enjoy!!!

Imo-mochi, Namasu, Chakin and Kuri Kinton.
Imo-mochi is not a traditional Osechi dish, but with these colors, we found that it is also good for Osechi!

Chickpea cocktail (yogurt and plain) and kombu-maki.

Osechi dishes (Kamaboko, Datemaki, Imo-mochi, Kombu-maki, Kuri kinton and Red ad White Namasu) served in the O-jyu box.

We really enjoyed cooking, chatting and eating the food together!!
Why don't you try these festive dishes for the holiday season?

Please find the recipes at Cookpad English version:

[IMCY ACTIVITY REPORT] Bazaars Autumn 2015

This autumn, we attended two local festivals in Yokohama: Hodogaya International Festa and Kaminoki Chiku Center Festival.

1) Hodogaya International Festa (Nov. 15)

We sold handmade items (by our volunteer members) and some imported items from India, Mexico, Hong Kong and France. Hair accessories for little girls were very popular! Our booth is always on the 4th floor where there are an exit from the hall and the kimono trial and photo shot room, so there are always many international people in their ethnic costume or kimono. We also enjoyed some ethnic foods from the stands downstairs.

This time, we also had a Christmas ornament workshop for children. Children loved it a lot and were happy with their project!

2) Kaminoki Chiku Center Festival (Nov. 22)
Kaminoki Chiku Center is close to JR Oguchi station. There were exhibition of art and craft works of those who use the center for their projects. There were also workshops and dance/music performances. Food stands and fresh fruit and vegetable sale were very popular, too.

We sold handmade items and imported items as the last time, and we also baked waffles there with Lebkuchen spices. Next to our stand was a chocolate fondu stand, so the sweet smells attracted the passers-by. As it was our first try, we didn't prepare much, so the waffles were sold out before noon.

We would like to show our deep gratitude to the visitors, the HIEC and Kaminoki Chiku Center staff for letting us join the festivals, and our volunteer members.

Thank you!!

[IMCY Activity Report] Deko Maki Sushi Workshop October 8th,2015

Deko Maki Sushi, they are too cute to eat. By putting some to your child's lunchbox for sports day or even an ordinary day, the lunch becomes bright and spectacular, doesn’t it?

This time, we learned how to make cute little rabbits. The previous Deko Maki Sushi workshops were quite popular and we received many applications this year as well. 12 participants were chosen following a lottery draw. The instructor was Ms.Emi Maeda, JLL Japan Deko Sushi Association Master Instructor. The lessons began in a peaceful atmosphere.

We started with demonstrations from our instructor. She showed us how to make the rabbits, the subject of this time, and also how to make a jack-o'-lantern, as Halloween is just around the corner.

Deko Maki Sushi can be very creative with a variety of choices of ingredients to "built up" a design. The rabbit we learned this time is a design that uses the basic deco-maki techniques. The instructor told us that if we master the basics, we will be able to make all sorts of designs.

The instructor quickly finishing a deko maki sushi, explaining what she is doing.

The shiny side of the nori comes outside and the rough side is inside.

When cutting, make sure to clean the knife and wet its blade with water.

The instructor finishing The rabbits and jack-o'-lanterns in short time!

After watching the demonstration, we started making the sushi at each table: 3 groups of 4 people. It looked easy when we were watching, but it was hard to spread the rice evenly on top of the nori, and we can't roll it well when we put too much rice on it. Our instructor went around a table to another to carefully provide advice for us. With pleasant conversation and smiles at each table, everyone enjoyed making sushi until the end.

There were also free babysitting service in the next room, so we believe many moms were able to have their own time to refresh. We would like to continue to have events to connect people.

Thanks for those who joined the workshop! We are looking forward to seeing you at next event!

[IMCY Activity Report] A Visit to Cookpad Office & Light Lunch Cooking

We had "A Visit to Cookpad Office & Light Lunch Cooking" on 31st July, 2015!

The international division at Cookpad kindly invited IMCY members to their fabulous kitchen to have a visit and light lunch cooking party.

The cooking theme was "Kids-friendly".

A recipe that's fun for kids?
A recipe friendly for kids?

If you are a mother with young children, you must have been at a loss trying to think up a over these questions: what shall we cook? What can please them and be nutritious at the same time?

So we decided this time to try some menus which, not only look good but are fun to make with kids. Mothers and children all had fun cooking together!

Cookpad provided us the location for this event, the kitchen in their head office on the 12th floor of Ebisu Garden Place. The spacious kitchen also had fantastic view!

The menu of the day was:

-Tortilla sandwich
-Ratatouille
-Stewed pumpkin
-Kakikori(Japanese shaved ice)

Participants all brought their own recipes and we started by sharing recipes as we began to cook together. And kids were happy to help cooking.

Making "shiratama dingo"… sticky rice flour dumplings.
Every single one of these were made by the kids.

Stewed pumpkin.
By sprinkling sugar over the pumpkin and letting it sit for 30 minutes, the pumpkin releases its natural moisture and becomes sweeter.

Tortilla sandwich.
The combination of the multi-colored vegetables adds an appetizing freshness to its presentation.

We cooked 4 dishes in about one hour and then sat down to enjoy them together. There were many bell peppers and tomatoes in the ratatouille and tortilla sandwich, but the kids ate them all up with zest.

At the end of the meal, we had shaved ice with a choice of toppings!
The kids were all screaming with joy.

You can find the recipes of the day and more kids-friendly recipes on Cookpad in English.
It is easy to create an account, so let's try it!

[ACTIVITY REPORT] Exchange & Chat Cafe July 1st&20th, 2015

Following from June, we had Exchange & Chat Cafe twice in July!

Although July 1 was a gloomy rainy day, about 10 families turned up for the event. In the play area, the children enjoyed themselves playing with the volunteer staff.
Some moms brought us a homemade cake, and it was a day where many moms were able to enjoy leisurely chats.

July 20 was a public holiday, and about 15 families turned up for the event.
As it was a public holiday, there were also some dads and working moms.
At the play area, we could see the children having fun.

Many moms brought ideas with them for our next activities and made suggestions about what kind of information is necessary for international moms in Yokohama/Japan. Ideas closely linked to daily life, such as things that need to be prepared at home in case of disasters like earthquakes, and comparison of food delivery services, were also shared. These ideas will be put together and we will decide new events.

Then, we enjoyed "Exchange" late in the event.

[LESSONS] Tadaku Cooking Classes

We would like to introduce Tadaku, a website for cooking classes, for cooking lovers.
They're looking for new instructors and students.

Here's a message from the Tadaku organizer:

At Tadaku, we organize cooking classes by foreigners living in Japan. Every teacher teaches his/her country's cuisine at home. It's not a formal cooking class, like ABC cooking, but a casual and relaxed cooking lesson, very similar to a home cooking party.

Tadaku is not just about food, but about cultural exchange through cooking. Students are people who are eager to learn other cultures and big foodies. There's nothing more gratifying than teaching the gastronomy and culture of your region to so interested people.

Tadaku classes are very popular among foreign mums living in Japan, because there are no requirements regarding the number of classes per month. You can host them when your child caring duties allow and you feel like it. Tadaku classes are also a great way of making new Japanese friends, which is usually a problem for mums who have recently arrived to Japan and don't speak Japanese.

[ACTIVITY REPORT] Hodogaya International Lounge AED Lesson for Foreign Families June 2015

When we find someone collapsed in the street or any of our family members choked while having meal… we might be in a panic. But if we learn some first-aid methods, stay calm and can deal with it, you may be able to save someone's life.

There were inquiries about this sort of session in English or for foreign people, especially those who have young children, so we asked Hodogaya International Lounge and they kindly accepted our proposal.

Hodogaya International Lounge holds International Mothers Gatherings supported by the ward, twice a month (basically 2nd and 4th Tuesday mornings at Iwama Shimin Plaza). The lesson was held on one of their gathering day, Tuesday June 23rd.

Two officers from Hodogaya Fire Station came to teach us. One of IMCY members translated the leaflet "What to Do If You See Someone Who Has Collapsed"and also worked as an interpreter during the lesson.

CPR for adults. If the person is unconscious, call other people for help and name one person for calling 119 and another to look for an AED set, then you start CPR. Two hands on the chest and push about 5cm in depth. If the person is a total stranger and you don't feel like comfortable (the person might be bleeding or vomit, which may cause you an infection, too), artificial respiration can be skipped. It takes about 8 minutes for an ambulance to arrive and considering the fact that there have been more and more ambulance calls, it may take more. So continuous cardiac massage is important.

For young children, you use only one hand.

For young babies, you use two fingers and you can do it on your lap or arm.

This is one of typical AED sets. This one has two cable-pat sets: one for adults and one for children. This one need to be switched on by the green button, but some starts automatically. The audio instruction will be in Japanese, but English instruction can be written, too.

Stay away when it analyzes the person's heart and when it gives him/her an electric shock.
For children, you put the pats one in front and one in back to place the heart in between the pats.
Participants then practiced how to use AED.

We also learned how to get rid of something stuck in the throat. From the back.

Or push up with a fist. This should not be applied to young babies and pregnant women.

And participants also received gifts!
We would like to show our deep gratitude to Hodogaya International Lounge, Hodogaya ward and Hodogaya Fire Station.  THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

If you couldn't make it this time, Hodogaya International Lounge us willing to continue this session, so please stay tuned or you can also give them what exactly you would like to learn.
